New Arrivals Happy to be at Elon College, Sept. 2, 1925

New Arrivals on the Hill Express Delight. . . Both Faculty and Students Are Very Favorably Impressed with the First Contacts Here

As we all know we have new people in our midst, new in the sense that they are lately arrived, but not new in the sense that they are strangers. This spirit of making new arrivals an integral part of us is a spirit that makes Elon known; it is a spirit that is known of and felt throughout the bounds of this state. For this reason, the Maroon and Gold hastened to become acquainted with the most recent arrivals on the Hill. Needless to say, all of them were highly pleased with Elon and with Elonites. When interviewed by a Marron and Gold reporter they all wished to express themselves, to show their feelings to the student body and take this means of expressing their satisfaction at finding such a good college and such a good student body.

“When in need of sunshine and happiness, come to Elon. We have it. For this reason, we have won the field of education. So can you.”

“I have been on the Hill just a few hours. My first impressions lead me to think that Iwilll ike the college fine. I am with several Freshmen, and they all seem to be of the same opinion as myself. All the professors seem to be men whom we will easily learn to like, and men who are capable of making their influence felt in the student body.”

It is only rarely that a dream is fulfilled far beyond the expectations of the dreamer, yet that has been my experience in coming to Elon. Anticipation has been so perfectly balanced by the reality that the first impressions have been wonderfully satisfactory. I speak especially of the physical features of the new Elon. Much has been said, but not enough, of these five beautiful and well-equipped buildings. From whatever angle one chooses to survey the group, the present an ensemble of beauty and dignity that is highly appropriate for an educational institution. From the sparkling freshness of y office in the library through the stimulating atmosphere of the first floor in Alamance, I go to the center of all my interests—the Mooney Christian Education Building. Elon can well be proud of the prophetic policy that made it the first college in the country to have such a building. If equipment is the first half of success, then this college has an unusual opportunity to make an outstanding contribution to the field of religious education. I feel honored to be working with such a school.

Equipment alone, however, does not make Elon. Although as I write the full program has not yet started, I have enjoyed to the fullest extent that open hospitality and genuine friendliness that is characteristic of every one on the campus, whether faculty or students. It is persons, and not things, that carry values. Hence, the persons I have met, in my few days here have only enhanced those first glowing impressions of a college where life is measured by the standard of love and service. My best wishes for a happy and successful year to every individual who helps to make Elon!
