Charlie Beaman Hopes His Hog Breaks Record at Sampson County Fair Nov. 3-7, 1925

County Fair Hog May Set Record. . . Charlie Beaman Feeding Black Poland China Now Weighing About 1,400

Always famous for premium hogs the Sampson County Fair this year may even break its own world record. According to reports, there is a huge black Poland China being fed t the Charlie Beaman farm near town, already tipping the beam around the 1,400 mark. This hog will be one of the super-attractions at the annual exposition, November 3-7.

Sampson County as the record for the production of the largest hog in the world. It was a black Poland China, weighing 1,446 pounds and hand fed by J.W. Patterson of Clinton. This monster piece of swine was on exhibition and captured the trophy at the 1922 Sampson County Fair. Other hogs of the high up avoirdupois include a black Poland China exhibited last year by Allen Butler, which registered 1,372 pounds, and a red Duroc, owned by Billie Peterson, registered slightly less than 1,300.

It is said that the Allen Butler hog was of larger bone and frame than the world champion, Patterson exhibit of the previous year, and had it not died, due to transportation, it would have established a new high mark. The Patterson hog, it is stated, weighing 1,446 pounds, moved virtually on its abdomen; the Butler hog, weighing 1,372, was fully a foot from the ground and could have taken on another 150 pounds.

There is a good chance that the Beaman hog will top the records in that it already is around 1,400 pounds and has a month to go. From the front page of the Sampson Independent, Clinton, N.C., Thursday, Oct. 8, 1925
