Durham, April 20-Seventy-nine out of 121 Durham boys questioned as to the kind of reading they do, said they read magazines of the true-story type, admitting it was because of the highly suggestive pictures they carry, Rev. H.E. Spence, of the school of religion of Duke University, told the congregation of the Duke Memorial Methodist Church last Sunday. Each month 1,600 copies of a magazine of this type are sold, Mr. Spence said, assailing the “pernicious influences of the sensational magazines which are flooding the American market.” Only 11 of the boys questioned read the Bible, the speaker said.
