He was the largest landholder in Rockingham County, with more than 40,000 acres along the Dan River between Spray and Cascade, Va. He owned 10,000 acres of rich meadowland in one track and the Spray Waterpower and Land Co., which he owned, was owner of a large part of the business sections of Spray, Leaksville and Draper, as well as a huge amount of other property. He founded the Imperial Bank and Trust Co. at Spray. He sold all of his mills except two.
He had business and social interests in many parts of Piedmont, North Carolina, in New York and in parts of Viriginia. For many years he was a big political force in Rockingham County, in fact the single greatest force in business and politics there.
His wife is now visiting her sister, Mrs. Motley Morehead, in Rye, England. Effort was being made today to reach her by cable and inform her of the death of her husband.
