Four Prisoners Saw Way out of Mecklenburg Jail, Oct. 30, 1926

Prisoners Escape from the Mecklenburg Jail. . . Left Tools for Sheriff, Saying He Might Be in Jail Sometime

Charlotte, Oct. 30 (AP)—Four prisoners sawed their way out of the Mecklenburg County Jail and escaped early today, leaving a note for the sheriff, saying:

“We are leaving our tools. Maybe you’ll be in jail yourself some day.”

The men were T. C. Mims, charged with burglary; J. L. Cunningham and F. A. Thomas, charged with stealing automobiles; and “Kid” Wallace, charged with larceny. All were being held for trial.

The men were incarcerated on the second floor and descended by a rope made of blankets.
