Decoration Day Honors Confederate Soldiers, 1918

From The Commonwealth, Scotland Neck, N.C., as published on Tuesday, May 7, 1918. The newspaper is published daily in the afternoon and its slogan is “Every one for each other and all together for Scotland Neck.”

Decoration Day Celebration
Friday next, May 10, will be a banner day for Scotland Neck inasmuch as the Daughters of the Confederacy, together with the school faculty, are preparing to give an impressive and entertaining exercise on the campus of the school grounds, to which not only the veterans but also the entire community is requested to be present at the flag raising.
The Boy Scouts are to act as escorts to the veterans and lead the precession to the ground where the following program will be carried out, after which all the local automobiles will be requested to carry the veterans, the daughters of the confederacy and as many of the audience as possible to the cemetery, where the graves of departed veterans will be decorated.
The ladies of the town are earnestly requested to contribute as many flowers for the decoration of the soldiers’ graves as possible and have them at the school house before the procession.
After the ceremony of decorating the graves at the cemetery the veterans will be brought back to the store next to the market recently occupied by McKeel, where dinner will be served to the veterans.
