Train Has Killed People But Not in Last Week, Says Brown, March 1, 1923

Train Leaves Trail of Blood. . . Coast Line No. 83 Said to Have Killed 10 People Last Week—Fatal Stretch Between Pembroke and Rennert

By W.H.M. Brown

Buie, Feb. 27—It is reported that the engineer on train No. 83 that killed Messers. James A. Ray and Bunyan Tolar as they were attempted to cross the track at Rennert Saturday morning in an automobile, made the statement that the same train had killed 10 people in the last week. This is a through train running from New York to Jacksonville.

If we mistake not, 6 or 7 people have been killed by trains in the past 6 or 8 years between Pembroke and Rennert. About four years ago Mr. N.A. Jackson was killed near Buie as he was crossing the railroad. A negro workman fell between the cars on a moving train 5 or 6 years ago near here and was found to pieces. And, as we remember, a flagman was also killed near Buie some years ago. Also an Indian woman of feeble mind was struck and killed by a train between Pembroke and Buie as she attempted to pull a dog off the tracks, and a colored man was killed by a train at or near Pembroke a few years ago.
