Mr. H.H. Greene, whose serious illness we have mentioned from time to time, died at his home in Boone Monday morning. The remains were taken to Beaver Dam where interment was made on Tuesday, the rev. F.M. Huggins conducting the funeral.
Soon after the Watauga Building and Loan Association was organized Mr. Green moved to Boone and was elected Secretary-Treasurer. He was a very active and most efficient official and was largely responsible for the almost unprecedented growth of that organization which today means so much to Boone and Watauga at large. He was also secretary of the Sugar Grove Federal Farm Loan Association at the time of his death.
Mr. Green was a very pleasant, affable gentleman, a good business man and better than all, he lived the life of a Christian. He was twice married, the second time to Mrs. Floy Mast of Boone, who survives him. A friend who had known him from his youth up remarked to the Democrat: “Henry Greene was a good citizen—he always has been.” He was 56 years of age and leaves some grown children by his first marriage.
From the front page of the Watauga Democrat, Boone, N.C., Thursday, Dec. 13, 1923. The newspaper spelled his last name Greene and Green. I suspect Greene is correct because the newspaper had a second obituary for Henry Greene, this one by F.M. Huggins, his minister, on page 3 of the same issue of the paper. It follows. The last name is spelled Greene in all but two cases.
Henry Greene, one of Watauga’s best citizens, passed to his reward at 2:30 a.m. Dec. 10th.
Brother Greene was born Nov. 24, 1866, on Beaver Dams. He was first married to Manda Green, sister to Rev. Geo. Greene, Missionary to China. She was a native of Caldwell County. She preceded him by 11 years to her reward. To this happy union five children were born: Mrs. Una Tester, Mrs. Clara Farthing of Blountville, Tenn., Mrs. Jane Dishman and Robert Greene. One is dead.
Brother Greene united with the Bethel Baptist Church when a young man. When Timbered Ridge church was organized, he moved his membership here, becoming a charter member of that church. Less than two years ago he moved his membership to the Boone Church. While a member of Timbered Ridge he was the Church Treasurer, and for several years served as Superintendent of the Sunday School. He was ever loyal and faithful to his church.
Brother Greene was raised in a large family. There were seven children. Six brothers and sisters are dead. Mr. Greene was a successful farmer. He was also Secretary-Treasurer of the Watauga Building & Loan Association when he died.
July 21, 1923 he was happily married to Mrs. Floy Mast of Boone. This brief married life was one of happiness. Brother Green was a good man, a faithful husband, a loving father, a true friend, a public spirited citizen, a loyal church member, a devout citizen.
The funeral services were conducted from his home on Beaver Dam by Rev. F.M. Huggins and W. Swift. The body was gently laid to rest in the family grave yard near the old home.
