News from Gap Creek, Cove Creek, Bamboo, in Dec. 13, 1923, Issue of Watauga Democrat, Boone, N.C.

Gap Creek News

Hassenger Bros. have notified the people of Hopkins that they will remove their railroad railings in about 30 days, which has been operating to Hopkins for the past three years. This branch of railroad will be missed greatly by the people of the Gap Creek Community.

Mr. M.S. Watson, brother to T.S. Watson, died at his home in Caldwell county on Friday morning. The remains were brought to Laurel Springs cemetery for burial on Saturday.

Miss Addie Watson of Yuma has been visiting her sister, Mrs. Raleigh Williams of Sands, N.C., the past week.

Mr. Alfred Watson of Yuma is suffering very much at this writing with a fevered leg which was caused by typhoid fever 15 years ago. Mr. Watson has tried in vain to find a remedy to cure this but has failed so far.

Mr. Odist Watson has purchased part of the Dr. Smith farm. Where Mr. Smith formerly lived, Mr. Watson has now moved and (is) living at home.

Cove Creek Items

A protracted meeting is in progress this week at the Willowdale church with the pastor, Rev. Ed Hodges in charge of the services.

At an enthusiastic meeting on Sunday night the B.Y.P.U. of the Cove Creek church reorganized and began work for the winter months. Miss Watson of the school faculty made an interesting talk.

The Thanksgiving services conducted by Rev. W.E. Wilson at the Baptist church on Thanksgiving Day was very appropriate. Although the congregation was rather small the offering of the church and Sunday school to the Thomasville orphanage amounted to $79.

Among recent visitors to the school were Mrs. W.L. Henson, Miss Rose Edna Dugger, Mr. J.J.. Glenn, Mr. A.D. Wilson and Miss Hinshaw of Knoxville.

In the second game of the Boone Public School on the local court the Cove Creek boys won by a score of 25 to 9.

Bamboo News

Mr. Earl Cook and wife of Rutherwood were visitors at C.M. Critcher’s Tuesday.

Mr. T.L. Critcher has returned from Wilkes where he has been visiting.

Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Edmisten visited Mr. J.D. Vandyke Sunday.

The revival at Brown’s chapel is still going on conducted by Rev. Mr. Jones.

Miss Cora Mille has returned from Statesville very much improved after a few days absence from her school.

Mr. Lonnie Matney is moving in the J.G. Cook house. Glad to have them with us.

Mr. G.F. Critcher is now running a steel drag over the road from the highway to Mount Vernon, putting the road in good condition again.

There will be prayer services at Mount Vernon Sunday night.

There will be two exercises given at Bamboo School Friday afternoon and Friday night, Dec. 21.

The afternoon programs will be given at 2 o’clock. It will consist of a drama (Christmas eve) and a few speeches given by the primary grade. There will be a small admission fee charged for the night program. Come and see “Those Dreadful Twins,” a very noted Comedy, given by the seventh grade.

Night exercises begin at 7 o’clock.
