Mrs. Gertie Moore Carter, 35, Buried; Paperwork to Return Her Shooter to N.C., Dec. 12, 1923

Slain Wife Buried Here Yesterday

The funeral of Mrs. Gertie Moore Carter, 35, who was shot and killed here Sunday night by Austin Carter, was conducted from the Moore residence Tuesday morning, an unusually large number of friends and relatives attending. Burial followed at Greenview cemetery.

Mrs. Carter was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Moore and is survived by her husband, who was also her first cousin, six small children ranging in age from 2 to 12 years, her parents and several sisters and brothers.

Requisition papers were forwarded yesterday to Governor Morrison asking for return into the state of North Carolina of W. Austin Carter, insurance man, who on Sunday evening shot and killed his wife and wounded two other kinsfolk, John Price, his brother-in-law, and Mrs. Sallie Price, his sister-in-law. Carter Monday made it known that he would not return to North Carolina without the requisition. He remains a prisoner in the Danville jail and was reported yesterday to be in a less agitated state than he was Monday.

There is slight improvement in the condition of Price, who has a bullet wound ranging from the left side to the right from which it emerged. One of the physicians who examined him stated that the damage wrought by the bullet is not known. It is apparent, however, that one of his lungs was penetrated for he suffered a severe hemorrhage Monday which further weakened him. He also had an elevated temperature Monday and the danger of the development of pneumonia was not underestimated.

Mrs. Sadie Price, who was wounded in the leg, is making good progress and is not considered seriously injured.

The police authorities are preparing for the hearing which will be given to Carter when he is removed to Reidsville for a preliminary hearing, which is not expected before Friday or Saturday. Chief Jackson has five or six eyewitnesses to the shooting who will be used by the state of North Carolina.
