A rather unusual marriage ceremony was performed here Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock when Squire Jim Maxwell united Mrs. Sam Smith in marriage to Mr. Sam Smith. The bride of the day was a bride of a day. She had been married to Mr. Smith in South Carolina less than 24 hours previously.
The way it came about was this: Saturday Miss Ada Stephens, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Stephens of Lake Waccamaw, ran away with Mr. Sam Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. S.T. Smith of the same town. The couple betook themselves to South Carolina and came back Mr. and Mrs. Sam Smith, for a twain that had been made one.
The parents of the bride were far from pleased, according to reports, at the couple getting married in South Carolina and Sunday evening, accompanied by the father of the bride, the couple came to town, secured a North Carolina license and were married again. In having the new license made out, the bride used her rightful name of Mrs. Sam Smith.
