Rev. Jesse V. Yates of Bina, Ashe County, who fell January 16th and accidentally shot himself, was brought to the Wilkes Hospital in North Wilkesboro on January 17th for treatment, where he died on February 1st, at 12:15 noon, at the age of 68 years, 11 months and 2 days.
The remains were taken ack to his home at Bina, Ashe County, and laid to rest in the Welch cemetery.
Rev. Yates professed faith in Christ over 30 years ago, and felt called to preach. Since that time, he has labored faithfully as a consecrated Chrisian among his brethren.
During his young manhood days he met Miss Sarah Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Miller of Ashe County, who later became his wife. To this union were born here girls and five boys, all of whom are living. The girls are Mrs. Alice Harzsog of Maryland, Mrs. Ester Rash of Bina, Miss Hattie Yates of Binna. The boys are Mord, Van, Ben, James and Dewey. All of whom were present when the end came with the exception of one daughter who was unable get here in time, but who arrived in time for the funeral. Rev. Yates is also survived by his widow, five brothers and two sisters, as follows: F.G., John M. and Thomas Yates, and one sister, Mrs. Alice Watts of Purlear; and Mr. W.L. and James M Yates, who reside in Wilkesboro. His other sister, Alpha C. McNeill of Kansas City, Mo., was unable to be present.
Rev. Yates was a Missionary Baptist and labored untiringly for the cause during all the better years of his life. During his service in the mountain people, among whom he spent his life, his labors were not without fruits, as he was instrumental in teaching many the better way to live, and his works brought forth a bounteous harvest for the Master.
The funeral was largely attended by a host of friends and relatives from far and near. The services were conducted by Revs. Finley Watts, Riddle, George Miller, May, and James Church. The Ready Undertakers in charge.
