Faith Community Notes Includes Letter from Chile, South America, April 6, 1926

Country Correspondence—Faith

Luther C. McCombs of Granite Quarry and Miss Lizzia Ruth Lefler of Crescent were married Saturday night by John D.A. Fisher at his residence here in Faith. Mr. McCombs is a son of Mr. and Mrs. W.W. McCombs of Granite Quarry and a fine young man, and Mrs. McCombs is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Lefler of near Crescent and a fine young lady. Venus and their many friends wish for them a long, happy life.

A.M. Foutz has an old-time chest over 100 years old.

John Jones and Rev. C.P. Fisher went fishing, got five strikes and landed four bass, largest one weighed seven pounds and eight ounces and one three pounds and on down. Who can beat that?

B.D. Bangle of Rowan County raised a lemon and wants to know if Venus can beat it? We give it up.

Mary Barringer, Salisbury, Rowan Mill, says she reads Venus’ items and wrote us a nice letter. She is a smart little girl.

Roberta Wood, Route 5, Salisbury, says she reads Venus’ items.

We saw nine carloads of granite going towards Salisbury from Granite Quarry. That is what is bringing the money to the people since J.T. Wyatt started up the business here.

Here is a letter Venus received from a long ways off by who reads our items in the concord Times. What a wonderful circulation the North Carolina papers do have that Venus writes for.

Arica, Chile

March 6, 1926

Dear Venus: I will write you a few lines. We expect to go back to Panama about the last of April or the first of May and then we go to New York where the crew will get leave and liberty. I expect to come home about June. Everything is so different in the navy. I think I have learned more since I have been in the navy than I did in all my eight years at school. People think it is play, but it not all play for we have to work as same as other people because we have all kinds of drills every day except Sunday. We have our good times and see so many different ports. I have been in the following ports, not mentioning the different ones in the states: England, France, Panama, Costa Rica, Columbia, Honduras, Cuba and Chile, and I expect to see lots more in the rest of my cruise. Here in Chile where we are now, instead of spending dollars and cents we spend pesos and centanos. We read your items in the Concord Times and we all like them. So come on with your items, Mr. Venus.

Someone found an egg within an egg and wants to know if Venus can beat it. We had one, but it fell and broke up at Daniel Boone’s cave when we had it there.

Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Peeler are both confined to their rooms, but Mrs. Peeler is improving nicely.

If any one has a vein of free milling gold on their farm near the top of the ground and would bring us a sample of the ore that would show little specks of pure gold and where a shaft can be sunk right down on the vein, we can get some partners to take hold of it right away because we got a letter from some northern people who want a gold mine. Bring your samples to Faith to Venus right away.

We met D.D. Pope of Woodleaf in Salisbury, the poultry man. He has 1,500 little chickens, 5,000 eggs setting and 500 old hens. If you can eat that, trot out your man.
