John Bartley Not Guilty of Murder of LIndsey Campbell, April 3, 1926

Bartley Exonerated. . . On the Charge of Murder in Connection with the Death of Lindsey Campbell

Asheville, April 3 (AP)—Harry Bartley, local jeweler, was exonerated on charges of murder in connection with the death of Lindsey Campbell, when a jury in Buncombe County Superior Court returned a verdict of “not guilty” shortly before noon today after deliberating 15 minutes.

Evidence showed Campbell had gone to the Bartley home in the early morning of November 1st in an intoxicated condition. After knocking and kicking on the door he aroused Bartley from sleep. The defendant ordered Campbell away but he refused to go, and declared he had come to tear the house down. He broke a pane of glass in the front door and Bartley fired a shot from the shot gun into the ceiling of the front porch in an attempt to frighten him away. Campbell said “you missed me that time.” Bartley then opened the door, remonstrating with Campbell. Campbell plunged at him, and he lowered his gun, shooting his assailant in the thigh.

Campbell was taken to a hospital for treatment, but blood poisoning set in and he died a week later. Numerous prominent people of Asheville testified as to the good character of the defendant. Bartley was released from custody immediately upon announcement of the verdict.
