John Burgess Sent to Federal Prison for Embezzling Packages from Post Office, April 9, 1926

Former Postal Clerk to ‘Pen’. . . John M. Burgess of Rocky Mount Goes to Federal Prison for 3 Years

Wilson, April 9—John M. Burgess, former postal clerk of Rocky Mount, was convicted in federal court here today on charges of embezzling $20,000 in registered packages from the post office at Rocky Mount. The jury was out 30 minutes In the verdict they recommended that the court exercise clemency sentence and Judge I.M. Meekins sentenced the young man to serve three years in federal prison in Atlanta.

The robbery occurred the night of Sept. 15, 1925.

Burgess, who took the stand today, stated that he was attacked by three men, overpowered and later wounded in a scuffle. The bandits then fled according to his story, taking the money.

The entire amount was later found at various places around the building.
