Oregon Inlet Has Rapidly Filled, April 9, 1926

Can Now Wade Across Inlet at Low Tide. . . Fishermen Report Oregon Inlet as Having Filled Rapidly in Past Few Days

Oregon Inlet, the only avenue for shad and herring entering the Noth Carolina sounds north of Ocracoke, has filled so rapidly in the past few days that a man may wade across it at low water, acceding to reports from a number of fishermen in the vicinity.

The fishermen state their belief that the closing of the inlet has been largely responsible for the poorest season they have ever known, as this season is now acknowledged. Other causes assigned are unfavorable prevailing winds, which have tended to keep fish from entering the inlet, and also helped to close it.

The fishing industry of all Albemarle Sound and tributaries from Hatteras to Edenton is dependent on Oregon Inlet. All shad and herring entering these waters to propagate come thru this inlet. It has been gradually closing for 10 years or more and helping to decrease the earnings of thousands of people who with more than $2 million investment in fishing tackle are dependent upon the industry.
