On the Front Page of Rockingham Post-Dispatch, Jan. 15, 1920

Short Articles from the Front Page of the Rockingham Post-Dispatch, January 15, 1920

Operation on Birthday
Mr. Robert Philips was operated on at the James hospital at Hamlet last Thursday night for strangulated hernia. He is getting on nicely and will be home in a week.

A coincidence is the fact that Mr. Phillips’ birthday was the night of the operation—he being 75 years old. (spelled Philips on first reference and Phillips on second; don’t know which is correct.)

Empty Jail
For the first time since Jailor Bean took charge in January of last year, the county boarding house is empty. Thomas Williams, the colored youth who wandered to the city with the carnival last fall and was convicted of gambling then, was hired out to Dockery-Allen Monday, he being the last prisoner in Jail. He was convicted at the term of last week, and sentenced to four months in jail, or privilege to be hired out.

Grist Mill
Dockery-Allen Co. are continuing to branch out. They are establishing a grist mill at their plant in West Rockingham, the miller being veteran J.A. McNair.

Small Fire
A small fire occurred in the card-room of Great Falls Mill Tuesday morning, about 11 o’clock. The damage was nominal.

Covington Wins Prizes at Charlotte Chicken Show
That there are blooded fowls in Rockingham is demonstrated by the premium awards made last week at the 33rd annual poultry show at Charlotte. Fanciers from five Southern states participated. The only entrant from Rockingham was E. Pres. Covington, the hard-working clerk in the local post office. He entered his Barred Rocks, and in the exhibition class won second cockerel and second hen; and in the Light Plymouth Rock class he won fourth cockerel.

Opening Dental Office
Dr. Clifford C. Steele will open his dental office in the Rancke Building, adjoining the post office, next week. He secured his license last June.

Ford’s Larger Quarters
The H.A. Page Ford Service Station has much larger quarters now. The upstairs of their building has been remodeled, and a huge elevator installed, so that cars are lifted upstairs where the repair department is now located. That gives the entire lower floor of the building for storage and sales purposes, and equips the plant for speedier and handier work.

Trestle Burns
The Seaboard trestle across Joe’s Creek between Laurel Hill and Old Hundred was destroyed by fire early Wednesday morning. Trans have been transferred at the wreck.

Still Captured
Sheriff McDonald and F.P.A. Carl Shores Tuesday afternoon broke up a large still on Little River, in Steele’s township, about three or four miles below the bridge. Eight stands of beer were poured out. The worm was not found.

Nabbed in Charlotte
Dudley Bradley, who with Ollie Woodson, broke jail Jan. 5th, was apprehended last week in Charlotte and is now on the roads of Mecklenburg for a two-year sentence. He was sent to jail from Hamlet for express robbery. Woodson was in jail for plying the pick-pocket game in the railroad yards at Hamlet. Both are colored, and their escape from jail was a clever bit of work.
