Don't Rely on "Has Heard," "They Say," Say Editor, April 9, 1920

From the April 9, 1920, editorial page of the Hertford County Herald, published every Friday by J. Roy Parker, editor, and Jas. S. Vinson, manager, Ahoskie, N.C.

Somebody is evidently doing a tall piece of lying or else they are making a hazardous guess about this assessment business in Hertford County. An Ahoskie man “has heard” that the property in this County had been assessed 60 per cent higher than the Bertie County property. Supervisor Cullens says Hertford is 5 per cent less, and he is in a pretty good position to know. The trouble lies with “they say,” “somebody has said,” or “I have heard.” If property in this County has been assessed 60 per cent higher than in Bertie, Supervisor Cullen is wrong in his statement; and if it has not been so assessed, then the perpetrator of the report is on the wrong side of the road. Where’s the source of such extravagant reports?
