You Wouldn't Believe What Goes On In Our County, April 9, 1920 Editorial

From the editorial page of the Franklin Times, Louisburg, N.C., April 9, 1920. A.F. Johnson, editor and manager.

It is a pity that a full report, with the entire history of each case and its disposition, of the Superintendent of Welfare cannot be published. Unfortunately it deals with conditions that cannot be given publicity owing to the unwarranted embarrassment it would bring. If it could be done, the people of Franklin County would recognize the necessity of such work and that in the future it promises to be one of the greatest works in our State. Learn a little more about things before you criticize too much.

Everybody agrees that a parent who willfully refuses to send his children to school when he has an opportunity to do so ought to be forced to do so. The only question upon which the people differ is the method of bringing about this justice to the child. Certainly a law cannot be made to apply to a class. It is no law unless it applies to all alike. A start had to be made. This year the records have been second and there is hardly any doubt but that some of the inconveniences will be eliminated, since they have been found. Let’s give it fair judgement. It will make us feel better.
