Hickory's Troop A Calvary Awaiting Rest of Equipment, April 17, 1920

From the April 17, 1920, issue of the Hickory Daily Times

Equipment Here for Hickory Cavalry

With 39 saddles, bridles, gloves, and other equipment in the armory and with the requisition issued for 16 horses, the Hickory platoon of Troop A cavalry soon will be on the job in earnest. The men drill every Thursday night and evince considerable interest in their work. In the middle of May Lieutenant Bowman and eight non-commissioned officers will go to Camp Cordon, Atlanta, for special training and it is expected that the horses will be here soon after their return.

Rifles and sabres have been received and checked off, but the carbines have not come in yet. The platoon has brand new equipment identical with that furnished regular United States cavalry. The platoon has 41 members with a waiting list of several and the platoon will be raised to a full troop with 32 horses just as soon as possible.

The Hickory reserve militia probably will be mustered out within the next two weeks. The rifles are backed for shipment and Lieutenant Bowman wrote to the adjutant general at Raleigh today informing him that he could sent an officer here to muster the old fellows out.

The cavalry of course will need some assistance from Hickory and the county and this will be readily extended.
