Maintain the Sand Clay Roads in Burke County, Dec. 4, 1920

Mr. Edward Abernethy constructed as good sand clay roads in Burke county as it has ever been the pleasure of the Record to see. Until a few days ago, however, it seemed that the authorities charged with the upkeep of the roads between Hickory and Morganton and Hickory and Rhodhiss had allowed them to wear without giving them any attention. On Thursday road gangs were at work and they had accomplished results. We are glad these fine roads will be maintained; not to keep them in repair is about the same as pouring the money voted by the townships into the gullies. By all means, keep the sand clay roads up at all times. (From the editorial page of the Hickory Daily Record, Dec. 4, 1920)
