Southern Passenger Train Sideswipes Six Freight Cars at Marion Yards, Dec. 8, 1920

Southern passenger train No. 36 eastbound sideswiped six freight cars at the Marion yards early today, tore up two of the cars and disfigured the locomotive of the massenger train and caused damage estimated at $10,000. Mr. Arthur Townsend, a passenger on the train, brought details to Hickory when it arrived two hours late, drawn by a freight engine. It seems that the six freight cars had not been shunted into the siding and that the passenger engine hit them. The cylinders of the passenger locomotive were torn up and the boiler damaged. None of the train crew was hurt. (From the Hickory Daily Record, Dec. 8, 1920)
