Young People Need to Remember Colored Citizens Entitled to Courteous Treatment, April 5,1921

Town Topics

A good colored citizen complains to us that the thoughtless among the white school children have caused him real trouble in the last few days through their practice of taking up; all the sidewalk and allowing him none of it. He is a good citizens and a busy man. Frequently he finds that he cannot use the sidewalk through fear of brushing against some white child whom he knows will become offended.

His complaint is a just one, and we want to plead with the kiddies to exercise a little more thoughtfulness. White youth, in its heedlessness, has a way of thinking that the world is its oyster and that no consideration is due members of other races. It is a characteristic of youth to be cruel, but we trust that our boys and girls will remember that our colored citizens are entitled to courteous treatment at all times. So, please, boys and girls, when you are leaving school, try not to monopolize all of the streets to the discomfort of folk who are intent upon their business.
