Republicans Endorse J.A. Hooper for Postmaster, March 3, 1922

Elizabeth City’s Next Postmaster

JETHRO ANDERSON HOOPER

The Pasquotank Republican Executive Committee, having endorsed Mr. Hooper for the postmastership at Elizabeth City, his appointment and confirmation is expected within the next 30 days. There were 13 applicants for the office and three survived in the recent examination. The three getting high scores in the examination were Dr. A.S. Pendleton, the present incumbent with a score of 90.8; C.E. Kramer, with 82.4; and Mr. Hooper with 80.8. Dr. Pendleton was eliminated because he is a Democrat and the Executive Committee voted seven to three for the appointment to go to Mr. Hooper. J.A. Hooper is 51 years old and a native of Dare County. He came to Elizabeth City 26 years ago, leaving the U.S. Coast Guard Service to enter the mercantile business here. He abandoned the business after four years and went to Fowler & Co., where he served as a traveling salesman for 15 years. For several years past he has traveled for the wholesale firm of C.H. Robinson Col., of this city. He is an alert, energetic, conscientious, even-tempered individual. He is well known in Elizabeth City as the teacher of the men’s bible class in the First M.E. Sunday School. His appointment will meet with the approval of Elizabeth City people generally and he is expected to make a satisfactory postmaster. Photo by Zoeller.
