Coroner's Jury Can't Name Person Who Killed Arthur Henderson, May 14, 1922

Negro’s Slayer Unknown to Jury

Coroner’s jury investigating the death of Arthur Henderson, who was shot in the back at the Royster Guano plant on the western edge of the city last Sunday morning, Saturday found that he came to his death from a gun shot wound inflicted by unknown persons.

Rev. Jerry McLilly and his son, who were arrested last week following the first session of the coroner’s jury, were released Saturday when conclusive evidence brought not be gathered.

It was the first brought out at the hearings that Henderson had said that McLilly shot him because words had passed between them when Henderson had been put on McLilly’s job. Later evidence was to the effect that Henderson said he could not swear that McLilly shot him.

Henderson was fired upon from the rear as he was making his rounds as watchman at the guano plant. He was taken to Good Samaritan hospital, where he died Tuesday. Coroner Frank Hovis empaneled the following jury: R.L. Sing, A.G. Epting, E.S. DeLaney, S.L. Porter, W.M. Matthews and J.W. Elliott.
