The Hickory fire department, of which Harry E. Whitener is chief, is entitled to felicitations. We do not know of any other fire department in the state which could have put over a project so readily as the local organization put over the Gamewell fire alarm system last week. It showed that Hickory business men, who might have informed the chief that it was up to the town to put in the system, showed their faith in the department and their appreciation of its work and efficiency by going down into their pockets for more than $2,500 cash to assist in the installation of a fire alarm system. If the firemen do not feel complimented by this manifestation of confidence, they are strange birds. They are not strange birds; they are earnest, efficient fire-fighters, who have the interest of their town at heart.
