Wilmington, Dec. 19—The local branch of the Ku Klux Klan today received from Mayor Edward Clark of New Bern a letter expressing the deepest gratitude for the aid rendered the sufferers of New Bern following in the wake of the mammoth fire that did so much damage in that city.
Mayor Clark was exceptionally high in his praise of the ready response the Klan made to his appeal for aid and said in part as follows:
“Without your aid the task would have exceeded our ability to have fully accomplished the stupendous work confronting us in alleviating the suffering in our midst. Your generous contributions and the magnanimous spirit which you have shown has incurred a debt of gratitude and appreciation of our entire citizenry which will last for all time to come.”
Several donations of more than ordinary size were made to the sufferers by the Klan in Wilmington and the recognition that their response met with is indeed appreciated by local Klansmen.
