The body of Charles Robertson, a negro, who was shot down while attempting to escape from the road camp on the Reidsville-Madison road, was brought back to Reidsville.
Robertson was carried to a Danville hospital Friday, suffering from a wound in the back and pneumonia. He died within a short time.
H.C. Sallings carried the wounded negro in and left after asking the hospital authorities to let Sheriff Smith of Rockingham know as soon as he recovered. Two guards, Barber and Carter, shot at Roberson and another negro named Van Hollins when both made a break for liberty last Thursday.
Van Hollins, with an 18-month term for housebreaking, escaped. Robertson was serving a year for an offense against public morals. Both arrived at the camp Tuesday.
