Charlotte, Feb. 6—Struck by an outbound Piedmont and Northern train while crossing the tracks, Kate Smith, 27, was killed almost instantly here today.
Partial deafness resulting in his failure to hear the engine was given as the cause for his stepping in front of the train.
From the front page of The Goldsboro News, Sunday morning, February 7, 1926. First name was spelled "Kate" in paper, and next line used "his" as pronoun. I found an account of this story in the Concord Daily Tribune, Feb. 6, 1926, which names the deceased as "Fate Smith."
