THE LEWIS MOTOR CO., TABOR

Whenever any movement is underway for the advancement of Tabor and Columbus County, Lewis Motor Company, Tabor’s largest automotive institution, can be counted on to sponsor the movement.

The Lewis Motor Company was established as authorized Ford, Fordson and Lincoln dealers in 1922, and has been under the management of Messrs. J.L. Lewis and J.P. Brown since 1925. Mr. Lewis is a hardware merchant and thus the management of the firm is practically left up to Mr. Brown, who is a thoroughly capable and reliable automobile man.

This firm carries a complete stock of genuine Ford parts in stock, and do not recommend the use of any other kind in servicing Ford cars. They also employ several expert mechanics in their Service department, whose work has always proven satisfactory on every job they have undertaken.

All the latest model Ford cars are carried in stock by this firm, ready for immediate delivery. And in this connection, it would not be amiss to say that the new model Ford is the greatest automobile buy ever offered by the Ford organization.

The building occupied by the Lewis Motor Company is 40 X 100 feet, ample in floor space to take care of immediate requirements, though an addition within the near future is being planned.

“For economical transportation buy a Chevrolet” has long been the trade slogan of the Chevrolet Motor company and Chevrolet dealers everywhere. This trade slogan is fully demonstrated by Messrs. Pridgen and McGougan of Whiteville, Columbus county, Chevrolet dealers.

This firm maintains a large and well equipped garage and show rooms on one of the principal business streets of Whiteville, employing 10 men. All of the mechanics are factory trained, and every job they turn out is guaranteed to give absolute satisfaction.

A complete line of parts, accessories, tires, tubes, etc. are always carried in stock, thus this firm is able to render immediate service to motorists.

Mr. J.B. McGougan, the manager, will be glad to demonstrate any one of the several models of Chevrolet cars to any interested person. The new model Chevrolet is the best automobile buy in the world, and they are sold on convenient terms.

Manager McGougan is a native of Columbus county and can be depended upon to assist any worthy movement making for the agricultural, commercial and industrial advancement of the county and its people. JACOB COHEN, MERCHANT, TABOR

Eleven years ago Jacob Cohen entered the mercantile business in Tabor in a small way. Today Jacob Cohen has one of the finest stores in this section of the country. Perseverance and square dealings made it so.

Since coming to Tabor Mr. Cohen has manifested a friendly interest toward the farmers of his section, of the county, and he numbers among his large lists of satisfied customers and friends hundreds of farmers.

Mr. Cohen carries a complete stock of dry goods, shoes, millinery, clothing, etc. Everything in his stock bears the tag of quality and is sold at the lowest consistent prices.

The big store is centrally located in the heart of the business district of Tabor and is chock full of the finest merchandise the market affords.

TABOR MOTOR COMPANY, TABOR

Known throughout this entire section as an up-to-date garage, employing the best mechanics, the Tabor Motor Company of Tabor, owned by Mr. Walter Leonard has grown year in and year out since its establishment in 1920 to be one of the largest automobile repair and service stations in Columbus county.

Hard, faithful, conscientious work built the Tabor Motor Company, for there is no man in Columbus county who likes to please his customers better than Mr. Leonard, the owner. Then too, Mr. Leonard knows his business, and so does all of the mechanics he employes. They fix a car, any make, to stay fixed.

This firm carries a complete stock of automobile parts, especially genuine Ford parts, are agents for Texaco products and Fisk and Goodyear tires and tubes.

The building occupied by this firm is constructed of brick, the second ever built in Tabor, and is conveniently located on one of the leading streets of the city.

Walter Leonard is a staunch Methodist and is prominently identified in local fraternal circles, being a member of the Woodmen of the World and the Junior Order of American Mechanics. He is forward propulsing and public spirited.

D.J. HUGHES MAKES FRUIT CONTAINERS, TABOR

With a plant ample to take care of all requirements, really one of the largest of its kind in the state, D.J. Hughes of Tabor, manufacturer of fruit and berry containers, is making great plans to furnish the strawberry growers of the state sufficient baskets for their product without interruption.

All during the off season Mr. Hughes has been making crates, baskets and containers of all kinds for the spring and summer trade. His gigantic plant has been busy every minute, and now he has millions of berry baskets stored away ready for immediate delivery.

Throughout the fruit and trucking sections of North and South Carolina containers made by D.J. Hughes at Tabor are recognized as the best the market affords. They are made of the best timbers, are securely put together by expert workmen, and will withstand the rough usage of handling.

It is worth while for any one to visit the big plant where Mr. Hughes makes his containers. Everything is mechanically perfect. Great machines do their work with human-like precision. The logs enter into one end of the factory fresh from the forest, and on the other end of the factory they are found in their finished state—perfect fruit and truck containers.

Although specializing in dewberry and strawberry crates, Mr. Hughes also makes crates and boxes of every description, building material and hoghead material.

Mr. D.J. Hughes is one of Columbus county’s foremost citizens. AVANT & SCHOLAR, WHITEFIELD

Avand and Scholar, Whiteville automobile dealers, have been selling Dodge Brothers cars in Columbus county since 1916, and the first car ever sold by this firm is still giving satisfactory service to the owner. Some reputation for the car, we say! Nothing we could do or say would add to or detract from this record.

Messrs. Avant and Scholar are also local dealers for Graham Brothers Trucks.

This firm maintains a well appointed garage and show room on one of the principal business streets of Whiteville, conveniently located to the trade.

The firm is composed of H.G. Avant and R.L. Scholar. Mr. Scholar joined the firm on the 10th of January, this year.

J.E. THOMPSON COMPANY, HALLSBORO

For 24 years the J.E. ThompsonCompany of Hallsboro have been manufacturing North Carolina pine lumber and selling general merchandise and fertilizers at Hallsboro.

The firm is composed of Messrs. W.A. and R.L. Thompson, well known citizens of the county, who stand four square for progress and advancement along construction lines. Boit of these gentlemen are interwiningly associated with the church, social and business life of the county.

This firm carries a complete stock of builders hardware building material, etc. They actually furnish material with which to build from foundation to roof.

The Messrs. J.E. Thompson Company operate one of the best and most modernly equipped saw mills and lumber plants in Columbus county.

The stock of merchandise carried by this firm I their big general store is complete in every detail. Armours open formula fertilizers are sold to the farmers by this life wire concern.

THE HAMMOND COMPANY, CERRO GORDO

Known throughout this section of Tarheelia as the farmer’s friend, Mr. J.P. Hammond, proprietor of the Hammond Company of Cerro Gordo, has made himself felt in the commercial activities of Columbus county during his one year in business.

The Hammond Company carries a complete line of groceries, notions, clothing, shoes, farmers supplies, etc. In this stock can be found nationally advertised brands of merchandise guaranteed by the makers and manufacturers to give absolute satisfaction. Preeminent among the stock of nationally known goods is the well known M. Born brand of clothing for men. This line is recognized everywhere sold as the best money can buy, and is sold at a very small margin of profit by this firm.

The Hammond company conducts one of the finest stores in Cerro Gordo, and Columbus county for that matter. Due to their method of square dealing, their clientele of satisfied customers is increasing week in and week out.

J.P. Hammond, the proprietor, is one of Cerro Gordo’s best known citizens. He is one of the town commissioners, a staunch Baptist and a Mason. Mr. Hammond is a public spirited and progressive citizen.

CERRO GORDO DRUG COMPANY Inc.

“Your druggist is more than a merchant” is a true trade slogan. The druggist is a professional man, whose duties ae just as exacting and equally as essential to the sick room as those of the attending physician. It is true that well kept drug stores carry a complete line of candies, rubber goods, proprietary medicines, smoker’s supplies, etc., but they also keep in attendance a registered pharmacist who compounds all prescriptions from pure drugs, as the doctor directs.

The Cerro Gordo Drug company Inc., established 10 years ago, is one of the most solidly established drug firms of Columbus county. An expert registered pharmacist is kept in attendance, a complete line of drugs, sundries, rubber goods, candies, smoker’s supplies and other lines of merchandise usually carried by an up-to-date drug store are displayed and sold by this firm. Prices are always right, and the service rendered their clientele unexcelled in this entire section of Carolina.

One of the most compelling features contained by the Cerro Gordo Drug Company is the large, sanitary soda fountain from which customers are refreshed with sodas, sundaes, ice creams, etc.

The interior of this drug store is kept immaculate. The stock is well arranged and the furniture and fixtures placed in convenient and comfortable position.

This store handles the famous Nyal line of remedies, and this within itself is a distinction, because this large drug manufacturing concern investigates the ability as well as the reliability of a druggist before placing their account.

H.B. Hammond, well known Cerro Gordo citizen, is manager of the Cerro Gordo Drug Company. Mr. Hammond has had charge of the business for the past 10 years, and under his administration the firm has grown to be one of the most solidly entrenched and most favored in Columbus county. Mr. Hammond is intertwiningly associated with the church, social and business life of Cerro Gordo and Columbus county, and is always found leading any movement making for the moral and material advancement of his town and county.

PIERCE & COMPANY, HALLSBORO

For 27 years Pierce and Company of Hallsboro have been assisting farmers and thereby developing their section of Columbus county.

Pierce and Company, a partnership composed of Messrs. S.W. Pierce, J.A. Wyche and J.B. Wyche, are manufacturers of North Carolina pine lumber and dealers in general merchandise at Hallsboro.

This firm maintains one of the best and most modern saw mill outfits in Columbus county. They sell rough and dressed lumber, either green or kiln dried, from their plant and ship to all parts along the Eastern coast of the United States.

Their store is the only modern brick building in their section of the county. In reality this store is a big city department store and would be so called in any big city. The stock carried is complete in every respect and represents some nationally known and well advertised brands of goods, such as Keen Kutter tools, Remington knives, Craddock Terry shoes, Style-plus clothes, etc.

Pierce and Company can be depended upon to assist any movement making for a bigger and better Hallsboro and a greater Columbus.
