Why Should Tax-Paying Business Within City Limits Not Have City Water for Firefighting, Asks W.C. Shaw, Nov. 4, 1926

Attention Water Committee

To the People of Weldon:

We wish to call your attention to a condition that should appeal to any fair minded person as an injustice that should be corrected.

The Weldon Cotton Manufacturing Co., a Weldon institution of long standing, owned and controlled by Weldon tax payers is without city water protection for fire-fighting purposes, and judging from negotiations with the present commissioner, it is not his purpose to relieve the situation.

We have to rely only upon our private installation for protection and to satisfy insurance demands. Today we have a letter from Factory Insurance Association asking if we are in corporate limits, why we have no city protection? This situation will shortly become acute, seriously effecting rates.

We believe that inasmuch as we are located within fire limits and the largest city tax payer, that we are entitled to equal protection that other tax-paying properties enjoy and public expression with reference of this is invited.

W. T. Shaw, President.
