Pasquotank Farmers Vote to Keep Free Range for Their Stock, Aug. 8, 1919

From The Independent, Elizabeth City, N.C., Aug. 8, 1919.

No Stock Law in Pasquotank. . . Country Majority Holds Free Range in County election Tuesday

The farmers of Pasquotank county don’t want Stock Law and the people of Elizabeth City don’t care whether they have Stock Law or Free Range, all of which is evident from the results of the Stock Law election held in this county Tuesday, August 5. Hardly half the town turned out to vote. The farmers did turn out and vote and while the town rolled up a majority for Stock Law, the county rolled up an overwhelming majority against it.

This settles the Stock Law question in this county for the next two years at least. It is probable however that the question will be revived with more vigor in another two years. Another Stock Law election in Pasquotank probably will result differently.

There is no mistaking the fact however that the country majority is in favor of Free Range. The country people are used to Free Range and they don’t want to give it up. There are tens of thousands of acres of woodland in this county that provide free forage for scrub cattle and hogs. It is hard for a people who have been used to this Free Range for centuries to give it up.

Stock Law first became an issue in this county in the last political campaign. Every effort was made to commit Pasquotank’s candidate for the General Assembly. Representative Saunders took the sensible course and provided an election, to let the people decide the question for themselves.
