Hickory Organizing an American Legion Post, Nov. 5, 1919

From The Hickory Daily Record, Nov. 5, 1919

To Organize Post of American Legion

Thirty former soldiers or service men met at the Chamber of Commerce last night and decided to organize a local post of the American Legion. Maj. Geo. L. Lyerly was elected temporary chairman and Lieut. Aldis C. Henderson was chosen temporary secretary and instructed to apply for a charter at once.

There were 2,800 men in the service from Catawba count and it was felt that two posts, one being at Newton and the other to be formed here, would be more likely to enlist the support of these former service men than would be the case with one organization. It is hoped to have several hundred members of the Hickory post.

All former soldiers, sailors or marines and all persons who have been in the service are invited to join.
