Give Diplomas to
Soldiers’ Relatives
As previously announced a memorial service in honor of the
soldier dead of Hickory and vicinity will be held by Hickory post No. 18,
American Legion in the Reformed church on Sunday afternoon, March 21, at 3
o’clock. At this time the French memorial death certificate, issued by the
French government, will be presented to the nearest kin of those from this
section who gave their lives in the service during the world war.
Judge Jeter C. Pritchard of Asheville, a speaker of ability,
has been secured to make the principal address, following which the diplomas
will be presented. A full program of the services will be announced later.
It was originally planned that these certificates be
distributed by the posts of the American Legion throughout the country on
Washington’s birthday, February 22, but locally the influenza interfered and as
soon as the quarantine was lifted the Hickory post set March 21 as the date.
The following list of the nearest of kin as furnished by the
war department is published for the information of all concerned, and it is the
desire of the local post that every one mentioned in the list attend the services
