Hubert Britton Badly Hurt Playing Around Molasses Mill in Operation, Sept. 9, 1921

Small Boy Hurt

Hubert Britton, the small son of Mr. Frank Britton on the Wheeler Martin Farm, was very badly hurt Wednesday afternoon while playing around a molasses mill in operation. The child was caught between the sweep and the wheel, and his head and face were seriously bruised. A slight fracture of the skull was ?? by X-Ray but attending physicians think they will be able to care for it successfully.

From the front page of The Enterprise, Williamston, N.C., Sept. 9, 1921. The photo below is not of Hubert Britton but of another young boy who lost an arm while working a molasses mill. For a description of how the accident occurred, go to relicrecord.com/blog/greatest-single-wing-tailback-ever-play-pro-football/. Despite the loss of his arm, Dwight LaRoux would grow up to play football for the Rock Island Independents. He’s in the front row, far right, with his teammates.
