Wilmington, April 6—N.W. Matthews, 60-year-old janitor at St. John’s Episcopal church, came to work this morning as usual, intent solely on hearing his $50 a month salary.
He found a letter informing him that a cousin had died in Kenansville, leaving him a third interest in an estate valued at $75,000.
From page 7 of The Chatham Record, Pittsboro, N.C., April 12, 1923. That $50 monthly salary would be the equivalent of $880 today, and the $75,000 he inherited would be the equivalent of $1.3 million.
