$500 Reward for Arrest of Murderer, April 20, 1923

$500 Reward for the Arrest of Murderer. . . Weeksville Man Resents Being Asked a Civil Question by Reporter

A reward of $500 is offered by the Commissioners of Pasquotank County for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the murderer of N.D. Pendleton, Weeksville merchant who was waylaid and robbed Monday night, April 9.

It is known that the man who killed Mr. Pendleton knew his habits well. Someone knew his habit of tacking a roll of bills in his vest pocket before leaving his store at night to go to his lodgings. But there seemed to be no clue to the murderer.

M.C. Stanley Sr., who lives above the store kept by the murdered man, asked if there were any clues to the murder, said: “I refuse to answer that question. I was asleep and in my bed when it happened.” It was near the open back gate of the home of M.C. Stanley Sr., adjoining the home of N.D. Pendleton that the body of Pendleton was found after he had been struck down, robbed and left unconscious and dying. Mr. Stanley says if he secures any information shedding light on the crime he will give it to his friend Sheriff Reid and not to a newspaper man.

From page 2 of the Elizabeth City Independent, April 20, 1923. $500 would be worth $8,296.49 today.
