150-Gallon Copper Stills, Whiskey, Captured and Destroyed, Nov. 21, 1923

Two 150 Gallon Copper Stills Were Captured

Raids in Virginia, near the North Carolina border, yesterday by State Prohibition Inspector W.T. Shelton, Deputy Sheriff P.P. Smith, and B.L. Heffinger, netted two 150 gallon copper stills, two 800 gallon fermenter boxes, four fermenter barrels, and 10 kegs containing several gallons of whiskey.

The distillings plants were located near Milton and Sycamore, and consisted of two complete units for the manufacture of white mule. None of the operators of the illicit stills was found, but the officers stated last night that arrests in connection with the cases will doubtless be made today. From all indications the stills had been operating shortly before the officers arrived, and the owners having gotten wind of their coming cleared out, evidently not desiring to run afoul of the guardians of the law.

The full manufacturing outfit, including stills, all equipment, liquor in process, and the completed product, were destroyed at the site of the operations.
