Arthur Crowder Said to Have Confessed to 1920 Murder of John Ford, Feb. 3, 1924

Gaston County Man Confesses to Murder of John Ford at Gastonia

Gastonia, N.C., Feb. 2—Arthur Crowder of Gaston County, who is held at Decatur, Ala., on a forgery charge, is alleged to have confessed to the murder of John Ford near here on November 2, 1920, according to the sheriff’s office of this county, which as been in communication with police authorities Iin Decatur. Sheriff Rhyne has gone to the Alabama city with a warrant for Crowder’s arrest.

Ford was killed in 1920 when he was a member of a party for four persons which was held up near here. Allegations of those in the party were to the effect that there had been attacks upon the two women members, one of whom also was seriously injured. It was alleged that negroes had committed the highway robbery and attacks but investigation resulted in the arrest of Robert Grice and John Caswell, who were tried, a mistrial being the result. The two men are now under bond awaiting a second hearing in court.
