Officers Search for Negro Woman. . . Murderous Attack Made Upon Husband Yesterday Morning with an Axe, Leaving Man in Dying Condition

Sheriff Grant and his deputies were in search yesterday afternoon for a negro woman, wife of a tenant living on the farm of Mr. Add Smith near Pikeville, who at an early hour yesterday morning made an attack on her husband, Roland Worrell, with murder in her heart while her husband slept.

From information secured regarding the affair, it appears that the two on a number of occasions had words, the woman using more threats upon the man and while the man was asleep the woman went out and secured an axe. Returning, a murderous attack was made upon the man. He awoke but too late to fully protect himself and the result as that his leg was severed from his body above the ankle.

The woman made her escape in an automobile leaving her husband for dead. The injured man secured aid from neighbors who called a doctor after the man was in an unconscious condition from loss of blood.

It was stated that only last fall the woman made an attack on her husband while he slept by saturating his clothing with kerosene with the purpose of burning him. As soon as his condition will allow the injured man will be brought here and placed in a hospital for treatment, and in the meantime a search for the woman will continue.
