Lee Gardner Gets Gold Watch for Delivering Papers 365 Days a Year, June 1, 1924

Herald Carrier Is Appreciated

Faithful service is appreciated by some people while others expect it as a natural thing and give it no thought. Lee Gardner, a carrier of the Durham Herald, was awarded a handsome gold watch and chain a few days ago by the residents of Club Boulevard for 2 ½ years of faithful service in carrying the Herald to every home, every day in the year, in bad weather and in foul, when feeling well and when feeling bad.

The presentation was made by Mrs. S.C. Brawley of Club Boulevard. She carried the gift to Lee’s home where it was presented. Mrs. Brawley in presenting it stated that the gift was given by subscribers served by Lee on the west end of Club Boulevard as recognition of the excellent delivery service given by him. The gift, she explained, was in the form of a graduation gift, Lee having received his diploma from the Durham High School Friday night.

Lee has been carrying the Herald for four consecutive years. When he began serving the Club Boulevard section he had a route of 190 subscribers. Today that number has increased to 378. He arises each morning at 3:30 o’clock, including Sundays, and works 365 days in the year. During the past school year he has paid all expenses from earnings from his route and has a savings account in a local bank of $135.
