Durham, May 7—“Yank,” a rugged, tow-headed, freckle-faced youngster of 14 summers and as many winters, has been adopted, for a limited time, at least, by the Duke ball club. He is, at present, under the protecting wing of Captain Charlie Saunders.
When the Blue Devils wee returning from their trip into Virginia and Maryland last week, their buss was hailed by a lad in ragged pantaloons and with a hungry look on his face, at Norlina, N.C. He asked for a lift, stating that he was on his way to Florida. The club first took the youngster to a restaurant, where he was told to order everything from “soup” to “rust-biff.” Then they fetched him along to the campus and outfitted him with new lines, three suits of clothes, and other accessories.
“Yank’s” real name is Paul Manchester, and his home is New Hanover, Pa. Having heard that there is untold wealth in the South, he decided that he would head down that way. By the time he got as far as Norlina, his clothes were rags, his money gone, and he was hungry. He was mighty glad the Duke club bus came along when it did.
At present the adopted Yankee lad is living in the fraternity house of Captain Saunders, and a job as waterboy has been secured for hi with the construction company now engaged in erecting buildings on the campus. His people in Pennsylvania have been notified, and he will be allowed to remain at the university for several months.
“Sure, I like Duke University fine,” says “Yank.”
