K.K.K. Grand Dragon Invites Auditing of Accounts, May 8, 1926

Invites Auditing of His Accounts. . . the Reply of Judge Grady, K.K.K. Grand Dragon, to Criticisms

Asheville, May 8—An invitation for an audit of his books as grand dragon of the Ku Klux Klan in North Carolina was issued Saturday by Judge Henry A. Grady of Clinton in commenting upon a resolution adopted Thursday night by Asheville Klan No. 40. This resolution charged that state officials of the Klan have mismanaged funds of the “realm” and demanded the immediate resignation of Judge Grady as dragon and C.C. McIlwaine as grand klacliff.

Replying to a request for a statement in connection with the Asheville klan’s resolution, Judge Grady, who was holding court in Washington, N.C., telegraphed: “Your wire received. For reply I invite you to have complete audit of my books, in Raleigh made by reputable certified public accountants, provided you will publish the results of this investigation and findings.”

A similar request for statement was addressed to Mr. McIlwaine at Raleigh, but o reply has been received.

John G. Willis of Asheville, secretary of a committee appointed at a meeting of the “Klorero” in Raleigh last October to investigate the financial affairs of the “realm” who made public the resolution adopted by the Asheville Klan, explained the position of himself and of the Asheville body.

The purpose of the Asheville Klan, according to Mr. Gillis, is not to break with the Imperial organization, but to oust from office the men with whose administration of the financial affairs the Klan there is dissatisfaction. “Judge Grady,” said Mr. Gillis, “approved the action of the Klorero in authorizing the finance committee to pass on all bills and expenditures of money, but later he wrote the committee to the effect that it would be impossible to operate his office under the rule established by the committee calling for the approval of a member of the committee on all vouchers issued.”
