Robert A. Speed, son of Robert A. and Mary Davis Speed, was born in Sandy Creek township, Franklin county, Dec. 8, 1857, and died at his residence, the Franklinton Hotel in Franklinton April 22, 1926. On both his father’s and his mother’s side his family was prominent in the social, political and religious life of Franklin, Warren, and Granville, a generation ago. One could not know the very best of this section I this day without knowing something of Sarepta Church in Franklin and Shade Grove in Warren and then over much of what they meant to the communities to the families with which Mr. Speed weas connected. He himself became a member of the Methodist church at Sarepta and afterwards at Ebenezer and Franklinton.

He was thrice married, first to Miss Laura Littlejohn, youngest daughter of Gen. J.B. Littlejohn of Ingleside; then to Miss Eva A. Harris of Fraklin; afterwards to Miss Ella Clegg of Chatham, who survives him. Three children also survive him, viz., Messrs. Plumer and Norwood T. Speed, and Mrs. Margaret Kenny of Columbia, S.C. Also the following brothers and sisters, Messrs. Al A., H.P. and Elmore Speed of Franklin County, and Mrs. E.H. Bobbitt of Franklinton, Mrs. L.J. Beckwith of Hyde county, and Mrs. E.T. Alston and Mrs. R.J. Stewart, both of Henderson.

The interment was in the cemetery at Franklinton and was attended by a large number of friends and relatives from this and adjoining counties.
