DEATH OF MRS. CARLAND

Mrs. Ernest Carland died last Friday, June 3, at her home near Tracey’s Grove in Henderson County. She was buried on Saturday at the cemetery of Dunns Creek Church, of which she was a member. This church is situated near the summit of See-Off ridge. A large congregation of sorrowing relatives and friends attended the service, which was conducted by Rev. S.B. McCall, pastor of Carrs Hill Church. Mrs. Carland was about 30 years of age. She was born and reared in the community where her body was laid to rest. She was married about a year ago.

Mrs. Carland was before her marriage Miss Lula Hogsed, daughter of Riley Hogsed, a well known citizen of Dunns Rock township. She bore among her friends and acquaintances the reputation of a splendid character.

She is survived by both her parents, two brothers, Bunyan and Carmon Hogsed of Dunns Rock Township, and a sister, Mrs. Oscar Ball, of this county. Her husband and two infant daughters, twins, also survive her.

MRS. NANCY PIKE DIES AT THOMASVILLE

Mrs. Nancy C. Pike, widow of the late J.C. Pike of this city, died at her home in Thomasville Saturday morning at 8 o’clock, heart failure being the immediate cause of her death. The deceased had been in declining health for several months but had been confined to her bed less than a week, her death thus coming as quite a shock to her family and friends.

Prior to 1916 Mrs. Pike made her home in this city. Since that time she has made her home with her daughter Miss Marry Pike, who with Mrs. D.W. Nesbit of Norfolk, Va., Mrs. William Everhart of Baltimore, and J.W. Pike of Concord are the surviving children. She is also survived by three brothers, S.A. and William Christian of this county and C.W. Christian of Cary. Mrs. Pike was a splendid Christian woman and a member of the Methodist church. Her remains were laid to rest in Thomasville Sunday afternoon.

MRS. BYRD AT REST

We take pleasure n paying the following well deserved tribute to Mrs. Elizabeth Jane Byrd who died at her home in this city, aged nearly 75 ½ years.

She was married to L.C. Byrd in Wilkes county and was the mother of 12 children, 10 of whom are still living. She is also survived by 84 grandchildren and 23 great-grand children.

She was an active member of the church for 60 years. After moving to this city she and her husband became members of the Second Baptist where she became an inspiration to her pastor. She was always in her place at the hour of worship, and was a mother in the Lord to the other members of the church. Her children will rise up and call er blessed.

She was indeed a mother in Israel, she lived her religion, in her home and in her church she was a power for good.

Her funeral was conducted by her pastor, Rev. McCarter, and the writer, C.C. Haymore.

DEATH OF MRS. MITCHELL

Mrs. Cornelia A. Mitchell was born Oct. 19, 1848. She was married to W.G. Mitchell Jan. 18, 1869. To this union were born seven children, five of whom are still living. Her husband died in October, 1902.

The deceased professed faith in Christ when a young girl and joined the Methodist church in Johnson (probably Johnston) county, but joined the First Baptist church after coming to this city. At the time of her death she held her membership in the Flat Rock church.

She was a good woman, always loyal to the church, and always present at services if not providentially hindered. She raised her children in the church.

Her funeral was conducted at the home of her son-in-law Dock Didkiff by the writer (C.C. Haymore), assisted by Rev. Z.V. Roberson, pastor of the Presbyterian church. She is not dead but sleepeth.
