County Agent Shares Reports From W.A. Clark, Alex McPherson Farms, June 1921

By Marion W. Wall, County Agent

W.A. Clark Believes in Pure Bred Poultry

The other day Mr. W.A. Clark of Jackson Springs was a caller in the office and gave this report:

“One day last fall I took a load of chickens over to Pinehurst and in this load I had 18 that were just the ordinary run of stock on the farm. These brought me 35 cents per pound. In the same lot I had 10 high grade Buff Orphingtons, and sold these at the same time. They brought 40 cents per pound. This was a difference of several dollars in just one little shipment of chickens, and I realized $54.31 from the lot.”

This is an excellent example of what a standard breed of poultry will do. This is evidence enough that it will pay us all to cull the flock and raise a better breed of poultry.

EFFICIENCY

A few weeks ago I was called to Mr. Alex McPherson’s farm near Cameron. Mr. McPherson was anxious to build a few terraces before he set his tobacco. At 11 o’clock we “set up” and laid out 500 feet of terraces and one hour later we had 250 feet of these terraces built.

It took a farm level, the County Agent, and Mr. McPherson to lay out the work, and it took a two-horse plow, two mules and a farm hand to throw u the terrace, and took a Martin Ditcher, three mules and two farm hands to finish the job. This only goes to show how much time can be saved and the work completed in a short time by having the right kind of implements and the idea to do a right thing.

$10,000 OFFERED

The Chicago Board of Trade is offering $10,000 in premiums for the grain and hay show which will be held in Chicago on November 25th. We are wondering if there are any farmers in Moore Count who would like to send them an exhibit. Remember what Charlie Picquet says, “there is nothing to big to undertake if you go at it right.”
