Mr. John Littleton Dickens, a well known and highly esteemed citizen of South Rosemary died at the home of his daughter Mrs. Leola Powell in Rosemary Sunday night at 11 o’clock. He had been critically ill for several days and the end was not unexpected. He had attained the ripe age of 76 years, practically all of which was spent in Halifax county. Mr. Dickens was born in the county and had a great love for it. He was married to Miss Mary Jane Hawks of Warren county December 4th, 1872, who preceded him to the grave about two years ago. To this union were born nine children, of which six survive, Mrs. Leola Powell, Mrs. Lillian Lyerly, and Messrs. Littleton, Benj. P., Claude M. Dickens of Rosemary and John L. Dickens of Portsmouth, Va.
For many years he had been a faithful member of Smith’s Methodist Episcopal church, form which the funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, conducted by his pastor, Rev. E. N. Harrison, assisted by Rev. Louis N. Taylor. Interment was made in the church cemetery by the side of his wife. The pall bearers were Messrs. M.R. Vick, Ed. Jackson, Mack Johnson, J.A. Pridgen, W.J. Norwood, H.J. Odom, Henry Robertson, Sam Sadler, Thos. Sadler, Wiley Johnson, Ed Hawkins and T.B. Turner.
