At the meeting of the Board of Aldermen last night, Mayor Lucas presided and the following members attended: Messrs. F.M. Miller, Graham Woodard, A.N. Daniel, R.H. Boswell, and Clayton Bardin.
Many matters of great interest to Wilson were considered and passed on, among them being the adoption of ordinances looking to bond issues for electric development and extension and other improvements.
The proceedings opened with discussion of a request by Mr. Creech that he be permitted to continue to use a hydrant on his place under the terms of an agreement between the city and the original owner of the property. The matter was referred to the water, gas, and light committee with power to act.
Approval was given to the plea of citizens for construction of curbing and gutter on Connor street between Vance and Lee, the property owners being willing to pay their share of the cost.
Sewer extension in Crowell street and Academy street whereby a number of homes would be provided with disposal facilities was referred to committee with authority to act.
An extensive street paving program was adopted, including the following projects:
--Vick, from Green to Nash.
--Lucas Avenue, from Nash to Gold.
--Hill, from Lee to Gold.
--Bynum, from Nash to Cone.
--Whitehead avenue, between Lee and Gold.
--Branch, from Bynum to Connor.
--Connor, from Branch to Nash.
--Lee, from Whitehead avenue to Cone.
--Bruton, from Vance to Broad.
--Green, from Pender to Vick.
Sidewalks
The following sidewalks improvements were authorized:
--Branch street, two blocks.
--Lee from Whitehead Ave. to Cone.
--Vance, from Bynum to Cone.
--Daniels, from Broad to Kenan.
Electrical Extension
The ordinance for electrical light extension bond issue carries with it a provision for expenditure not exceeding $200,000, and provides for large improvements in this department of the city’s activities.
It is estimated that the street paving improvements will total about $280,000. This does not include the sidewalks, but the sum for this development will be comparatively small.
The sewer ordinance calls for an expenditure of approximately $32,000.
Barbed Wire Fence
An ordinance was adopted making it unlawful to erect barbed wire fences in the city.
An ordinance was passed regulating roller skating in the community.
The parking ordinance now in force was repealed and the drafting of another ordinance to take its place was referred to the proper committee. This action by the board is not effective until April.
The general opinion of the board seemed to be that the present regulations applying to parking motor cars and trucks is not successful. It was stated that the fire department finds the present situation on the streets very disadvantageous.
The session of the board closed with the reading of the minutes of the preceding session by the clerk, Mr. T.A. Hinnant. The minutes were approved.
