The schools of the county are getting ready for what promises to be the best County School meet ever held in Harnett County. Practically all the schools have made entries, both for the literary contests in the morning and the athletic events of the afternoon.
Mr. A.T. Allen, State Supt. of Public Instruction, will speak at 11 o’clock in the Lillington High School auditorium. Also Miss Ruth Corpening, Director of music in the Lillington High School, will give a program demonstrating some of the value of public school music.
At 1 o’clock every one will gather at the ball park where the boys and girls will demonstrate the value of physical training. The vents for the afternoon program have not been selected as a display of strength, but to show the results of training the mind and the body to work in harmony, and demonstrate a spirit of friendly rivalry between the various schools.
The first event on the program is the folk dance by the primary grades. This will be held promptly at 1 o’clock. Five dollars in gold will be given by Harnett County news as a prize in this event.
Following this, the boys’ event will begin. County agent H.A. Edge, will have charge of the events for the boys and with a corps of assistants skilled in athletics. No time will be lost in putting this part of the program over.
the vents for girls, under the direction of Miss Mame F. Camp, and her assistants, will be going on at the same time as the events for boys.
The runs and dashes for boys will be the last events on the program of individual contests. These will be held on the street in front of the ball park.
Following these events, a demonstration of mass athletics will be given by Mr. T.D. Moor, director of physical education in Buies Creek Academy. this will show how the school children may all be engaged in some form of wholesome exercise at the same time.
The championship basket ball games will be the last event on the day’s program. The winners in the second half have not yet been determined, but will be announced later.
Individual prizes will be given the winner in each event, also a pennant will be given the school scoring the highest number of points in each of the three groups. A loving cup will be awarded to the school declared champion for the county.
