Monroe Enquirer
From time to time I am asked why The Enquirer does not publish a society column.
Well, dearly beloved, when the courts begin to prosecute sassiety folk for card-playin’ for prizes like they do niggers for crap-shootin’—principle of both the same—then we could have some might good readin’ matter.
From page 6 of the Concord Daily Tribune, Tuesday, March 18, 1924.
I think the editor used “sassiety” to mean society. I’ve also hesitated to use this article printed in at least two newspapers—The Monroe Enquirer and the Concord Tribune—because of the use of the “N” word, but I’ve decided to print it because my goal is to show what life was actually like. Life sure wasn’t perfect 100 years ago.
